Finances and generosity
Money can be a sensitive topic for many of us, yet Jesus spoke about money and wealth more than almost anything else. He understood how easily our attitudes toward money can become barriers to a healthy relationship with God & others (Luke 18:13; Matthew 19:18–28).
In the sections below, we look at some of the key issues Christians face when it comes to money and the heart. We also outline how we understand money and giving within the life of our church, and how these practices reflect our trust in God and commitment to His work.
Our approach to finances

Giving in the Old Testament
In the Old Testament, God gave Israel clear instructions about giving. One of the key practices was the tithe: setting aside 10% of their harvest and flocks as “holy to the Lord” (Lev. 27:30). Early on, this tithe was used each year for a communal feast celebrating God’s goodness. Every third year, it was set aside for the priests, Levites and the poor (Deut. 14:22–29).
As the nation developed, the tithe increasingly supported the temple, its workers and those in need (Neh. 10:37–39). In addition to the tithe, Israel was commanded to give other offerings connected to specific needs and ceremonial occasions.
Money can be a very sensitive topic for many people. However, it’s interesting that Jesus actually spoke more about money than almost any other subject.
Giving in the New Testament
In the New Testament, Jesus “raises the bar” on giving. Rather than emphasising the tithe, he addressed the heart behind our giving (Matthew 6:2–4). He called his followers to be generous (Luke 6:30–31) and to give as an expression of faith and trust in God’s provision (Luke 6:38).
While the New Testament doesn’t prescribe a specific giving pattern, it does encourage believers to share in the responsibility of supporting mission and ministry (1 Timothy 5:17–18) and to meet the needs of the poor (Luke 12:32–34). Paul also insists that giving should be willing and joyful, not pressured or reluctant (2 Corinthians 9:6–7).

Giving in the Vineyard perspective
John Wimber once said, “Commitment is spelt M.O.N.E.Y.” His point was that a person’s giving often reflects their commitment to a local church. In the Vineyard, we expect that those who are committed to God and to this fellowship will also express that commitment through financial generosity. At the same time, we want people to give freely and cheerfully—as an act of worship and an expression of faith.
If you are our guest, welcome! There is no obligation to give.
